President Tinubu Swears In General Christopher Musa as Nigeria's New Minister of Defence

Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.) as the new Minister of Defence, marking a significant strategic move aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to tackle its complex security challenges. The appointment, which follows the resignation of the former minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, for health reasons, was swiftly confirmed by the Senate and formally sealed with a swearing-in ceremony in Abuja.


General Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), brings a wealth of military experience and a decorated career spanning over three decades to the Defence Ministry. His appointment signals the President's commitment to consolidating recent security gains and driving a more integrated national security response across the country.

Biography: General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.)

General Christopher Gwabin Musa, born on December 25, 1967, in Sokoto, Sokoto State, is an experienced and highly respected military officer known for his operational effectiveness, particularly in counter-insurgency warfare. He is an indigene of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Education and Military Training:

Musa's pursuit of military excellence began early. After completing his secondary education at the Federal Government College, Sokoto, he attended the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria. In 1986, he gained admission into the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a member of the 38th Regular Course. He earned a Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree upon graduation and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps in 1991.


He furthered his academic and military education with notable courses both home and abroad, including:

  • Advanced Diploma in Security Management from the University of Lagos (2007-2008).

  • Master of Science (Military Science) in Defence and Strategies from the International College of Defence Studies, National Defence University (ICDS-NDU), Changping, China (2012-2013).

  • Combined Joint Land Component Commander's Course on Leadership at the US Army War College (2017).

Career and Key Operational Roles:

General Musa's career is marked by several strategic command and staff appointments:

  • Commanding Roles: He commanded the 73 Battalion and served as General Staff Officer 1 for Training/Operations at the HQ 81 Division.

  • Multinational Operations: He was Commander, Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Region, contributing to regional efforts against insurgency.

  • Counter-Insurgency Leadership: A highlight of his career was his command as the Theatre Commander for Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East, the main operation combating Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents. His tenure in this role was widely recognized for significant successes against the terrorist groups.

  • Chief of Defence Staff (CDS): In 2023, President Tinubu appointed him as the Chief of Defence Staff, the highest military position in the country, a role he held until October 2025 before his ministerial nomination.

Awards and Recognition:

General Musa has received numerous accolades for his service, including the National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR). Notably, he was awarded the internationally recognized Colin Powell Meritorious Award for Soldiering in 2012, acknowledging his distinguished conduct and commitment to duty.

As Minister of Defence, General Musa is expected to focus on fostering greater synergy among the armed forces, accelerating the procurement of necessary equipment, and intensifying the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other internal threats.
